Orthopedic Equipment Tech II
Designs, manufactures, and modified equipment used in conjunction with Occupational, Physical, and Speech Therapies.
Duties may include welding, upholstery, small electronics and working with plastics, as required by the Habilitation Services Department.
Varying from moderate to complex level of construction and fabrication.
Works with a diverse group of staff and individuals.
Works under the direct supervision of the Wheelchair Technician III/Lead of the Wheelchair Shop with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
This department is part of Habilitation Services.
This work will also involve planning, scheduling, and processing paperwork.
Tech II will be required to repair and maintain assistive/adaptive equipment, small electronics and wheelchairs as required by the department.
May be asked to train others as needed and assume some managerial duties from time to time in the absence of the Lead Tech III.
Essential Job Functions: Attends work on a regular basis and may be required to work a specific shift schedule or, at times, even a rotating schedule, extended shift and/or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Designs, manufactures, repairs, and modifies assistive/adaptive equipment, small electronics and wheelchairs including welding, upholstery, and working with plastics as required by Habilitation Services department (OT, PT, and SLP).
Creating and maintaining a working inventory of various Habilitation Therapies equipment Planning, scheduling, and processing paperwork.
On call service when scheduled.
Must be able to respond to phone calls and/or pager within 30 minutes by returning call.
Train others as needed.
Ability to lift 70 lbs.

Will also need the ability to squat, kneel, bend, use both hands, stand for long periods of time, handle power tools, and work in environment of fluctuating temperatures.
Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation.
Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
Knowledge Skills Abilities: Knowledge of wheelchair and assistive equipment manufacturing and fabrication work.
Maintenance knowledge of wheelchairs.
Knowledge of various material used in the fabrication of adaptive equipment which includes welding, electronics, upholstery, and working with plastics.
An understanding of anatomical terminology a plus.
Knowledge in the use of a wide range of hand held and power tools used in fabrication of adaptive equipment.
The ability to train and/or manage others, prepare specifications, plan and organize time, and to prepare concise and timely work orders and paperwork.
May require CPR, First Aide and SUR training for this position.
Registration or Licensure Requirements: Current Texas driver’s license required; good driving record may be required.
Initial Selection Criteria: Graduation from an accredited high school or GED, plus one (1) year of work related experience in the fields of maintenance, wheelchair fabrication, fabrication/modification of adaptive equipment/ small electronics or one (1) year commensurate experience in the field of welding construction, upholstery, plastic or metal fabrication.
Must be able to lift 70 lbs.
