PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform construction related duties, including buried and aerial drops and network extensions.
Use interpersonal skills for interaction with customers for installation requirements and issue resolution.
Work with the Member Services department on subscriber and landowner issues to ensure contractors are performing work on schedule and all issues assigned have resolution.
Perform fiber optic splicing (fusion and mechanical).
Locate underground facilities.
Oversees direction of assigned construction contractors working on the system.
Operate, inspect, and maintain aerial devices, digger/derricks, excavation equipment, and other telecommunications related equipment.
Provide oversight and perform quality control of external fiber construction, drop and splicing contractors.
Perform troubleshooting at site operations, including OTDR and light meter readings.
Aerial and underground maintenance of fiber optic lines.
Daily inspects the assigned PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) to ensure equipment is safe and in good order.
Adhere to proper safety precautions and procedures.
Attend and participate in on going safety meetings and training to enhance skills and knowledge base.
Read and interpret blueprints, staking sheets, and other specifications for construction of fiber optic lines.
Properly utilizes radio communication equipment and procedures.
Respond regularly and promptly to work.
Perform daily time entry and other information/documentation as required.
Observe all traffic rules and regulations while operating Cooperative vehicles.
Perform other duties as required.
What Mid-South Requires: Education and/or Experience High School Diploma or equivalent required.
Four (4) years prior construction experience with a telecommunications and fiber optics utility.
An equivalent combination of education, experience and training may be considered.
Licenses & Certifications Must obtain a Class A CDL (Commercial Drivers License) obtain within ninety (90) days of hire date.
Must maintain current safety and professional certifications and credentials as may be required (e.
g.
First Aid, CPR, AED, DDC, etc.
).
Must obtain certification for Hurtman Rescue and maintain certification throughout employment in position.
The process, standards and expectations are established by Mid-South Synergy and employee must meet those within a time limit of four (4) minutes.
Initial certification is scheduled within the first six (6) months of employment and recertification is scheduled on an annual basis.
Employee must meet all standards and expectations in order to pass and continue to be certified and employed in this position.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Strong work ethic.
General PC abilities, including Microsoft Office and tablet operation skills.
Ability to operate and navigate electronic maps.
Be familiar with the hazards that exist, including falls, electric shock, electric flash, falling objects and traffic; and is familiar with the use of protection equipment, safety equipment and first aid.
Ability to build drops to required specifications and convey these specifications to drop contractors.
Telecommunications and Fiber construction Know Cooperative’s safety rules and be able to administer all approved methods of resuscitation and be able to render practical first aid.
Know the locations of and be able to operate the assigned firefighting equipment.
Know what kind of equipment to use on electrical, oil and other fires.
Ability to multi-task and work in a high-energy, fast paced environment and adapt to constantly changing priorities and situations.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information.
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with internal and external customers.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands Must be able to work varied hours and schedule as required, which may change frequently or periodically.
Must be available to work as emergency response.
Must be able to respond within 30 minutes of call out.
Must be able to work in all types of outdoor weather conditions for extended periods of time.
Must be able to work at varied heights up to 60’ above ground level, including pole, ladder and bucket truck.
Must be able to work in a stressful environment and potentially dangerous situations such as working around high voltage equipment, in small spaces, in wooded areas, etc.
There is potential for exposure to moving mechanical parts and risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
Talking is required to communicate with team members and System Operations.
Good hearing is required in order to receive instructions and directions from team members, Dispatch, etc.
May be exposed to chemicals and fumes such as paint, exhaust, etc.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
The employee must have strength and endurance adequate for arduous labor.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects up to 50 pounds.
Must be able and willing to travel to and from each location as required.
Travel will be in accordance with the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and Mid-South Synergy policies and procedures.
Equipment Typically Used Work shall be performed in a safe and efficient manner with proper tools and equipment, including, but not limited to, leather gloves, power tools, pole climbing equipment, heavy machinery, Cooperative’s trucks, firefighting equipment, etc.
