Streets Maintenance Worker
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under direct or general supervision, the Streets Maintenance Worker performs a variety of technical maintenance duties involved in the repair, replacement, and maintenance work on all City of Caldwell streets and drainage.
He or she has regular contact with customers, requiring courteous, effective communication skills.
Performs patching, maintenance of easements of rights-of-way, ditch maintenance, and various other duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
In addition to the other duties listed in this Job Description, the Streets Maintenance Worker must perform the following essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation:
Participates in the construction and maintenance of city streets and drainage projects as instructed by the Director of Public works.
Assists in the patching of City of Caldwell streets and drainage as needed.
May be required to operate more than one piece of heavy equipment in an eight-hour period.
Operates, transports, and maintains various types of equipment including but not limited to backhoes, small trucks, tractor mowers, and other light motorized equipment.
Maintains easements and rights-of-way; edges, mows, and trims vegetation and weeds; removes garbage and debris; levels unpaved surfaces and fills potholes; re-posts traffic control devices.
Performs cement and asphalt repairs including sealing cracks and potholes; repairs and replaces broken or damaged signs; replaces and installs street reflectors, barriers, and advisory signs.
Completes storm water ditch maintenance; inspects ditches; clears blockages and repairs or replaces structures; jets pipelines; clears grates; inspects illegal dumping and discharge to aid in pollution prevention.
Will be required to respond to after-hours emergencies and weekends as needed; and participates in city-wide emergency response as necessary; clears debris from accidents and weather events; conducts traffic control for crew as needed.
Assists other departments as needed.
Cares for and maintain assigned vehicle and equipment.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees throughout all City Departments and with the general public.
Work safely, follow safety rules and training, wear personal protective devices when required and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
Communicate effectively with supervisors, co-workers and others (internally and externally) in order to provide, exchange, or verify information, answer inquires, address issues, or resolve and/or report problems or complaints.
Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
Have a minimum of a Class C Drivers License with an acceptable driving record.
Possess or obtain within six (6) months of employment a minimum of a Class B Commercial Drivers License (Class B CDL) and maintain an acceptable driving record.
Ability to read, write, and perform basic mathematical calculations.
Must be available during off-duty hours for and respond to business calls in a timely manner.
Have satisfactory results on background and pre-employment physical/medical exam.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Must have ability to stand for long periods of time to flag traffic and/or patch roads and streets.
Must be able and willing to work in various weather conditions.
Must be able to exert in excess of 75 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects and/or equipment.
