64/hour as Apprentice (those w/Lineman experience will come in higher depending on years of experience) Posting Opening Date 04/29/2024 Posting Closing Date Job Summary Performs overhead and underground electric line construction and maintenance for Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU).
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to climbing poles, working from an aerial lift, driving trucks, operating equipment, and loading/unloading materials.
Essential Job Functions Performs high and low voltage line duties involved in the construction and maintenance of electric transmission, underground and distribution conductors, structures and equipment.
Installs, operates and maintains overhead and underground facilities according to BTU standards and the National Electric Safety Code (NESC).
Works with wiring diagrams and blueprints as related to transmission and distribution construction and maintenance.
Uses electric line construction equipment to include, but not limited to, stringing equipment, backhoes, derrick diggers, material handlers and trucks.
Efficiently and safely performs line work on a pole or in an aerial lift truck.
Troubleshoots electric customer service problems, distribution and transmission problems as part of a crew.
Performs electrical work under the direct supervision of a Lead Lineman.
Loads and unloads material.
Learns and displays a working knowledge of work rules and safety practices.
Responds with sound judgment to unusual and hazardous circumstances.
Maintains responsibility for verifying the condition of all vehicles, equipment and tools provided for use in the performance of work.
Trains and participates with crew of line technicians, line apprentices, ground helpers and other workers engaged in electric transmission and overhead and underground distribution work activities.
Represents BTU in a manner conducive to good public relations.
Assists with recordkeeping and maintains a log of work assigned/performed (hours broken down into specific categories).
Performs other duties as assigned.
Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications Apprentice Requirements: Requires a High School Diploma/GED.
Work experience in electrical construction, maintenance or repair of electrical/electronic equipment, or other labor/skilled trades experience is preferred.
Must be able to progress successfully through a four-year apprentice training program.
Depending on experience/training, applicants may come in at a higher level within the apprentice program.
After successful completion of the apprentice program, the Apprentice Lineman shall be advanced to the position of Journeyman Lineman.
Journeyman Requirements: Requires a High School Diploma/GED.
Must possess at least three (3) years of work experience as a Lineman performing overhead/underground electric line construction.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Knowledge of: Hazards involved in working around energized lines and equipment involving high and low voltage.
Ability to: Follow verbal and written instructions.
Learn job-related procedures and techniques, primarily through verbal instruction, observation, and on-the-job training.
Climb poles up to and exceeding 55’ in height with approved climbing gear and work with high voltage wires and related equipment.
Safely and efficiently use all materials, tools, and equipment involved in power line construction, repair, and maintenance and adhere to safety policies and procedures.
Make simple arithmetic calculations such as calculating figures and amounts related to electrical loads, system capacity, utility construction, etc.
Work independently and/or with limited direction, as well as cooperatively in a team environment, while consistently demonstrating collaborative, respectful, and productive work habits.
Observe and analyze situations quickly and objectively and, using good judgment, determine an effective and efficient course of action to be taken with due regard to the task, hazards, situation, and circumstance.
Communicate clearly and effectively with internal and external customers, vendors, contractors, and other diverse audiences while providing outstanding customer service.
Remain constantly alert and aware of any workplace hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and attendance.
Comply with all City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and to communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements Requires at minimum a Texas Class C driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
Must be able to obtain a Texas Class A commercial driver’s license within 180 days of employment.
Residence must be within 30-minute response time.
Physical Demands Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, using hands to grip/handle tools and equipment and frequently lifting or carrying heavy objects between 50-100 pounds Must be able to work at varying heights above ground, in manholes, and/or in confined spaces.
Working Conditions This position works primarily in the field at heights exceeding 55’, around low and high-voltage wires, and in confined spaces, such as ditches and underground vaults requiring entry through a manhole.
There is exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes, dust, pollen, odors, fumes, electrical shock, heights, rough terrain, traffic hazards, moving mechanical parts, loud noises, vibration, and toxic or caustic chemicals/materials.
Equipment Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: bucket truck, digger truck, extension stick, pole climbing equipment, trencher, hot line tools and various other hand tools and equipment pertaining to this position.
