35/hour (or higher depending on licensing/certification) Posting Opening Date 02/08/2024 Posting Closing Date Job Summary This position performs the duties of a general laborer or those requiring basic understanding and use of tools in the maintenance, installation, and general repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems for the City of Bryan.
Essential Job Functions Assists with the installation and repair of water and sewer lines and other related facilities, including excavating and repairing broken lines.
Performs work in assembling, laying, and aligning water distribution and water reclamation collection mains and service lines.
Operates air hammer to break rock and asphalt; uses pick and shovel to remove dirt and rock; uses a probe to locate the pipe.
Assists with the City’s preventative maintenance program on water distribution and wastewater collection mains, lines, equipment, and facilities.
Transports materials, tools, and equipment to and from job sites, and sets up and removes warning signs and traffic control devices.
Loads and unloads trucks; drives a dump truck as needed.
Operates a variety of hand tools, power tools, and other equipment such as jackhammers, air compressors, pumps, pneumatic tools, and generators.
Cleans, services, and maintains assigned tools, machinery, equipment, and vehicles and conducts walkaround checks of assigned vehicles and heavy equipment at the beginning of each work day to ensure it is in safe working order and properly stocked.
Ensures that all established safety precautions and practices are observed during the performance of work; wears proper safety gear on every job site (PPE).
Performs related duties as required.
Responds regularly and promptly to work.
Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or GED.
Must possess at least one (1) year of work experience performing semi-skilled and/or skilled manual labor.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to: Perform standardized routines and follow verbal and written instructions.
Learn job-related procedures and techniques, primarily through verbal instruction, observation, and on-the-job training.
Safely and efficiently operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used in performing essential functions.
Read and interpret basic maps and blueprints.
Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
Take the initiative to learn individual job tasks and continue to broaden knowledge levels by willingly accepting new responsibilities and attending training to advance skills.
Remain constantly alert and aware of any workplace hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
Comply with all City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the area of responsibility.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements Texas Class C driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
Once hired, a Class A commercial driver’s license must be obtained within the time frame set by the department.
Physical Demands Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, driving, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, crawling, climbing, and using hands and fingers to operate equipment and to lift or move objects up weighing up to 80 pounds, or more with the use of proper equipment.
Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in outside weather conditions.
While in the field this position is exposed to inclement weather and temperature extremes, rough/uneven terrain, road hazards, sewage, refuse, load noises and vibration, cramped/confined spaces, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, dust, chemicals, odors, fumes, pollen, and other airborne particles.
Equipment Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: shovels, rakes, saws, drills, pumps, compressors, hand tools, power tools, and light and medium-duty trucks/equipment.
Once a commercial driver’s license is obtained, the position will operate heavy equipment.
