Description The School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts (PVFA) at Texas A&M University invites applications for one (1) full-time, tenure-track assistant professor of music technology with a 9-month academic appointment beginning in fall 2024.
The school and, within it, the Dance, Music, and Theater Performance Section seek an individual who demonstrates expertise in creating technology-based music, including one or more of the following areas: Artificial intelligence Physical computing (e.
g.
, sensors, actuators, microcontrollers, or designing circuits, interfaces, or instruments for computer music) Computer music composition or performance Preference will be given to candidates with experience in multiple items listed above, exceptional experience in any single area listed above, or experience creating music and sound in conjunction with: games or other audiovisual media, augmented reality, virtual reality, digital twins, or other forms of extended reality, networked, distributed, online, or Internet of Things contexts, interdisciplinary collaborations, e.
g.
, with other musicians, dance, visual arts, theater, or performance art, analog hardware or circuitry, or improvisation or experimental performance.
Candidates should be able to teach a variety of courses in the new Minor in Music Technology program (launched in fall 2023) and a graduate degree that is in development.
Beyond using off-the-shelf products in conventional ways, the music technology curriculum guides students in exploring novel approaches to musical expression with courses in: foundations of performance technology, recording production techniques, fixed-media composition, programming for composers, composing with artificial intelligence, interactive and generative music, intermedia art, instrument design, improvisation and other performing ensembles, and electronic music history, literature, and aesthetics, studied through practice.
Candidates are expected to develop and maintain competitive research and creative activities, teach undergraduate and eventually graduate courses in technology-based music, develop and implement curriculum pertaining to the PVFA School programs, particularly in the area of music technology, and contribute to academic service.
Candidates will be expected to gain visibility through peer-reviewed academic research publications, juried creative works, or both.
Priority will also be given to those who demonstrate the ability to pursue external funding to support their work, produce events, promote recruitment, or contribute to curriculum, program, or facility development.
The School of Performance, Visualization & Fine Arts is a school within the Texas A&M University System and has a diverse and dynamic mission with more than 70 faculty and 30 staff members and a projected significant growth in the next 5 years.
The school was formed by bringing together the disciplines of dance, film studies, music, music technology, performance studies, theater, visual arts and graphic design, visual culture, and visualization.
The mission of PVFA places a heavy emphasis on faculty and student collaboration and interdisciplinary work in both scholarly and creative research.
Texas A&M University leadership has charged the school with developing innovative research and creative works, public performances, and degree offerings at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels that build upon our strength in merging art and science, as well as the traditional fields of music, dance, art, and theater.
