00/hour Posting Opening Date 04/08/2024 Posting Closing Date Job Summary Performs a variety of duties for the City of Bryan Parks & Recreation Department related to the activities and operations of the City’s Summer Day Camp Program.
Works with other camp counselors to oversee youth participants’ safety and participation in activities such as games, field trips, sports, swimming, arts and crafts, and other indoor and outdoor activities.
Essential Job Functions Assists the Recreation Coordinator and/or Camp Coordinator in planning and implementing recreation programs for youth.
Leads, directs, and supervises youth (at an assigned location and age group) in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities.
Encourages participation and proper conduct of all program participants.
Assists in ensuring the safety of all program participants, staff, and the public.
Reports any safety or disciplinary concerns to management.
Acts as a role model to program participants and other staff by demonstrating high standards of personal conduct.
Problem-solves through situations and seeks assistance when necessary.
Maintains positive public relations with those encountered through the program.
Provides information and explanations of the processes and procedures of day camp to the program participants and their parents/guardians.
Assists in maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of grounds and facilities after completion of activities.
Responds quickly to all emergency situations; administers any emergency first aid as needed.
Continually practices safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers, and program participants.
Reports for duty at the times specified and ensures a high standard of personal presentation and appearance is maintained per policy.
Attends mandatory training, orientations, and other staff meetings as scheduled.
Adheres to the policies, rules, regulations, and procedures of the City of Bryan and the Parks and Recreation Department.
Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications Required: Must be at least 16 years of age.
Preferred: High School Diploma/GED.
Experience working with youth in a recreational or camp setting and/or experience assisting with recreation activities geared toward youth is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to: Learn department functions thoroughly to provide general information and explain detailed department processes and procedures.
Demonstrate collaborative, respectful, and productive work habits.
Present a professional appearance and demeanor.
Understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
Work with youth in a group setting.
Remain watchful and alert at all times while on duty.
Successfully interact with people of different social, economic, and ethnic backgrounds.
Encourage, challenge, and mentor youth in a group setting.
Be responsible, friendly, enthusiastic, patient, and willing to learn.
React quickly and calmly in emergencies.
Work effectively as an individual and as a team member.
Remain constantly alert and aware of any potential workplace hazards and follow the safety practices and principles in reporting and preventing accidents.
Communicate effectively with patrons, supervisors, and other employees.
Comply with City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
Work effectively as an individual and as a team member.
Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
Provide management with sound, positive advice, and information concerning the incumbent’s area of responsibility.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work and communicate effectively with the public and other required entities.
Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Strong customer service skills, with the ability to respond to customer inquiries with tact and diplomacy.
Bilingual skills (Spanish/English) are a plus.
Licenses, Certifications & Special Requirements Required: Current First Aid and CPR/AED (Course C) certifications or the ability to obtain the certifications within the time frame set by the department.
(Certification course will be provided free of charge, if selected for hire.
) Preferred: Texas Class C driver’s license with a good driving record as measured by the City’s evaluation system.
Physical Demands Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, talking, hearing, seeing, standing, walking, running, swimming, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, twisting, bending, stretching, crawling, climbing, jumping, balancing, using hands and fingers to operate or lift objects, tools, and program equipment, and lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
The type of work involves extreme care, concentration, stamina, and manual dexterity.
Working Conditions This position works indoors and outdoors with groups of youth (ranging from 5-12 years of age).
Must be able to physically demonstrate and participate in various games and physical activities.
While outdoors, there is exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes (at times exceeding 100°F), wet and/or humid conditions, various depths of water, noise, dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
Equipment Work shall be performed with tools, appliances, and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: sports equipment, fishing equipment, recreation supplies, and arts and crafts supplies.
